Al fresco weddings
Weddings are a tradition that keep on evolving. Aside from design
trends and a new pantone colour that pops up every year, couples keep on re-inventing their nuptials with their own personal twist, and that’s what makes them so exciting. As a wedding planner, I’m always thrilled to see couples who are open to something new. However, this time couples are acting on what they have been lacking for months: the outdoors. It seems like more and more couples want to celebrate al fresco. Just to be clear, I’m not referring to weddings in a party tent; I’m talking about celebrating under the stars! Everything - from the ceremony, to the cocktail, the dinner and the dancing - is held outside.
Of course, outdoor weddings are not something new. They are common in areas where sunshine is always included in the weather forecast. However, on the east coast this isn’t the case: the weather can be extremely unpredictable, so most couples prefer to stay away from these types of weddings. That is until our friend Covid-19 reared its ugly head and kept everyone inside... Because of this, we are seeing a shift where couples are willing to role the dice and get married outdoors. In my opinion, the rewards outweigh the risks because if it is executed properly you can have an epic celebration.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning your al fresco wedding:
1- Always have a plan B in case it rains. There are two viable options to consider; the first is to find a venue that has beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces, so no matter what happens you are covered and probably at no extra cost. The second option is to plan for a party tent. Unfortunately, in this situation you will have to pay a non-refundable deposit to reserve your tent. If it rains, you will pay the full price and if it doesn’t you will simply lose your deposit.
2- Plan for some nice intimate outdoor lighting, in addition to your candles.
3- Make sure your DJ has a power generator to strategically place speakers in case the outdoor space does not have a power connection nearby.
4- Prepare insect repellant candles and spray for your guests.
5- Inform your guests to have the proper foot attire, e.g., a wedge heel may be more appropriate than a skinny heel.
6- Keep in mind that al fresco weddings can be very elegant or more casual. It’s up to you to decide how you want your al fresco affair to be.
7- Consider renting a dance floor as it is not as fun to dance on grass or a pebbly surface. (I know from my own experience!)
8- The menu should be suited for the climate. For example, if you are getting married in the middle of summer, consider having a watermelon salad, gazpacho shots, refreshing drinks etc.
9- Customize your accessories to the weather. If evenings tend to get coolish, have some cozy blankets for guests and some outdoor heaters; if it’s hot, consider distributing hand held fans.
10- Because the outdoors are already beautiful, make sure your decor compliments as opposed to overtaking nature’s beauty. Less is more, therefore there is no need for unnecessary decor. (This will also you save you money.)
